Saturday, August 30th

Kara's home! Tim was at a "sweet 16" party for one of his classmates, so Kara let me take her out for dinner... she is so grown up! We talked about her work with the sophomores and her fellow CCF www.gtccf.org interns and the trip she is planning to tour the ministry of Global Scope in Salamanca, Spain later this year.

Here she is (in brown) with all of her fellow interns (all May graduates of Georgia Tech) atop Stone Mountain earlier this month.

Friday, August 29th

This is a "proud papa" entry... Tim's teammates voted him captain along with our two seniors (see picture; Tim is in blue ready for the coin toss). He scored the first two goals (and assisted on our third) in a 3-1 victory over Statesville Christian (a team that beat us 4-3 last year). Go Lions!

Thursday, August 28th

Shelby Cogburn has definitely been Lana's favorite of Tim's female classmates... she is an exceptionally mature and sweet-spirited young lady (in a class full of them). She let me snap this picture of her as she was being wheeled away today by paramedics! Doctors can't yet seem to figure out what triggers the symptoms that have hospitalized her periodically the past couple of years, but they do consider them life-threatening, so we take them very seriously.

Wednesday, August 27th

I was asked to serve as speaker at the first middle school chapel service of the school year (held this afternoon). I used "Brotherly Kindness" as the theme, 2 Peter 1:5-8 as our focal passage, and started out by sharing that students at my old schools called my wife "Mrs. Kindness", when they found it hard to pronounce our surname. She had a special way of endearing herself to everyone... I took this picture today during our faculty meeting in Mr. Ripmaster's 6th grade classroom... How cool is that?!!

Tuesday, August 26th

It has been one of the driest summers on record in these parts, so I guess the fact that today's game was rained out means that fall is here... Tim and his teammates (and coaches) are kind of bummed; they are really anxious to put last week behind them with a victory, which I suppose will have to wait until Friday when we play Statesville Christian (a I-A Final Four team from last year) on the road...

On the positive side, it's more time for Tim's ankle to heal... he would've played today, but it is still pretty sore.

Monday, August 25th

This was the first full day of school for us... I spent at least a half hour observing all but one of the new teachers (pictured) in one of their classes. They are all doing great... thank you for praying!

We had a good practice with a focus on scoring... hopefully, it will pay dividends in tomorrow's first conference game against Spartanburg Day School (4:30 @ACA). Tim's right ankle is still quite sore, but he should be able to play. Admission is free!

Sunday, August 24th

“How are you doing?” is more of a greeting than a question in our society… a couple of weeks ago I was jogging on the Parkway and a biker used the phrase going about 30 mph in the opposite direction… I knew he wasn’t expecting a reply.

If you are taking time to read this journal, on the other hand, you are likely interested in more than the local news and weather… I wrestle with just how much to share here, desiring to “take my problems to God and faith to family”.
I wouldn’t want anyone, however, to get the idea that there aren’t moments of deep sorrow, but they are mercifully brief. Lana did a great job preparing us for her departure… I just miss her.

Saturday, August 23rd

Rough weekend for the boys... with four (including Tim) on the sidelines nursing injuries from Friday's match, we went down 6-1 to High Point Christian... ouch! On the bright side, we did score the last goal in each of our games, meaning we never stopped playing. I still feel we have a chance to have a special team this year. We play our first home (and first conference) game next Tuesday at 4:30 against Spartanburg Day. If you are in the area, come out and cheer for our team!

One of our freshman players celebrated his 15th today... Happy Birthday, Andrew Johnson!

Friday, August 22nd

Village Christian beat us 3-1 on a "hat-trick" by their lead striker, "Tyson"... we need to find a way to neutralize our opponents' star player (within the rules of the game, of course). The team we play tomorrow has an equally-talented player in the same position, with an even better supporting cast... I'll be very surprised if High Point Christian is not a final four team this year.

On a positive note, we played an exceptional second half, after being down 2-0 at the midway point, and were unlucky not to narrow the margin of victory... we out-shot them 10-4, and could have knotted the score with slightly better aim. Pictured are Sammy Feinberg, Jared Robinson and Austin Pelle enjoying dinner at Pioneer Family Restaurant after the game.

Thursday, August 21st

Well, the first day of school has come and gone... it was great to see everyone; we have a terrific bunch of students (582 at last count)!

Tim already has homework! Fun, fun, fun, and tomorrow we go on the road to play two of our division's play-off teams from last year...

Wednesday, August 20th

The long-awaited day of our first game arrived... the JV kicked things off with an exciting come-from-behind 3-2 victory (they are pictured warming-up for the game).

The varsity was on the short end of a 3-0 score, and made a decent opponent look great. We will need to find our game quickly... we play critical games this weekend against Village and High Point Christian. Poor showings against either of those teams will lose us votes in the seeding for spots in the play-offs, but more importantly we just need to play the way we are capable of playing!

Tuesday, August 19th

The faculty devotional went well this morning, praise God! I wanted to share from the passage in Daniel (Chapters 2-4) that the student government leaders had chosen this year for their theme "out of our minds" (the terminology of which actually comes from II Corinthians 5:13).

Rather than focus on the faithfulness and courage of Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, I chose the thick-headedness and pride of Nebuchadnezzar, as God revealed Himself more and more clearly as Sovereign. To his credit, he did 'wake up' eventually and begin to see his authority in its proper perspective (as assigned by "The One Who gives and takes away")

I closed saying that (though we are not kings) we are no less dependent on God for our authority and effectiveness in working with those He has assigned to our care at ACA.

Monday, August 18th

I am leading the faculty devotional tomorrow morning at 8:00... oddly enough, the fact that I've known for quite some time what I want to share makes me not one bit less nervous. Awareness of my total dependence on God is always made keener when I'm called upon to address a large group... and that is a good thing!

We've been praying to have enough boys to field three soccer teams (varsity, jv and middle school)... with the addition of two new players today, it looks as though God's answer is "yes". Our first games are this Wednesday (jv @5:00; varsity @7:00) at Owen High School.

Sunday, August 17th

Just a great father-son day... worship and Bible study in the morning; picnic lunch with church family and baptism of over 100 people at Biltmore Lake (including one of Tim's classmates)... then Tim and I worked on some "finishing" (a term used in soccer for the art of putting the ball in the net), got cleaned up and went over to another of his classmates' house for dinner.

The boys have three games this coming week... all away, and against good competition... should give us a good idea of how far we will have to go to be competitive at the end of the season. Oh, and classes start Thursday!

Saturday, August 16th

Some of you have been asking about Kara, so I thought I'd post the letter she just sent to her supporters. If you'd like to receive her updates directly, drop her a line at kara.kynast@gmail.com

"Well, it's been almost 3 weeks and school is about to start for our students. It's been a long road to get here, but overall has been extremely rewarding.
The first few days were really tough. The five staff members have been pushing us to know what to expect- on the first day they had students make a huge mess for us to clean up. With 14 of us interning, it didn't take long- but it was so overwhelming to come downstairs on the first day and be calculating how long it would take individually... it was neat to see how working together made it a lot more manageable.
We've cleaned and painted the house (I got to pick the paint colors!!) and planned and presented small group bible studies and large group bible studies, learned how the ministry runs and operates, had team building exercises (such as being woken up at 5am to hike Stone Mountain together :S), went camping for two nights and shared testimonies, went on an intern retreat- and then last weekend we planned and held a retreat for our individual leadership groups.

There were 53 of the 108 sophomores at the "Branch Bark" retreat (Branch Barks are the sophomores that have signed contracts to be in the servant leadership group of CCF)... and they are so amazing! They are about to run this ministry that I love, and I can't wait. They are enthusiastic and encouraging, talented and loving. There are some students that have clearly been much more "popular" than others all their lives, and yet they reach out to the more awkward students. I was beaming the whole time, thanking God for the freshmen interns last year for collecting such a group that reflected the love of Jesus to each other, even as they are all still figuring out what they believe.
We had all of the Branch Barks tell us what they wanted from this year after a long time of reflection on Saturday night. We heard students say they wanted to figure out what they believed over and over again. I'm going to need your prayers constantly this year as they seem like they are getting ready to ask the hard hitting questions that will define their walk with God. It scares me and excites me at the same time.
I'm no speaker, and so I know it was God that helped me lead Saturday night. I know He'll be there to help me in the small accountability groups with the girls that right now are 'take it or leave it' towards Christianity. I feel so blessed to be able to be used this year, but so nervous and unprepared for the potential heartbreak of not getting through.
So thank you all again for supporting me and for keeping up with this ministry. I love you all!!" -Kara

Friday, August 15th

This is the group that gathered for the second annual alumni scrimmage, that pits former ACA players against the current varsity and jv. There was no official score, but it was no defensive battle... some of the fans had it tied at 6; others 7-6... either way it was a lot of fun for players and fans! First game is next Wednesday at Owen HS (JV @5:00/Varsity @7:00).

Thursday, August 14th

Good first day for all the returning teachers... I snapped this picture at our opening session where they were getting to know their new colleagues.

This is as fine a group of professionals as I've ever had the privilege of working with!

Wednesday, August 13th

Terry and Laura Hughes welcomed baby Luke into this world at 4:20 this afternoon... he tipped the scales at 8 lbs. 6 oz. and measures 19 1/2" In her husband's words, mom was "fabulous" and son is healthy as a midfielder. Picture forthcoming...

Practice went well, but I'm sure the kids will be ready to have their head coach back by Friday...

Tuesday, August 12th

Here they are... the newest additions to our middle/upper school faculty. Top (L-R) are Alex Panagiotacos (Fine Arts Coordinator/Band); Stephen Owens (Dean of Men); Jeff Herzog (Biology, AP Statistics, Bible); Edgar Silva (Spanish). Seated: Mary Ellen Auten (Math); Hillary Solymosi (Chorus 4th-12th). Those of you in our ACA family are invited to meet them in person next Tuesday 9:30-12:00... they are terrific!

Our head soccer coach, Terry Hughes, will be taking the next couple of days off to be with his wife, Laura, while she is in the hospital giving birth to their son, Luke... that means of course that I'll be running practice Wednesday and Thursday!

Monday, August 11th

With all the excitement of the first day with our new teachers, I forgot to take a picture... sorry! Lunch seemed to go really well; everyone cleaned their plates and came back for seconds (that was my grandmother's "acid test" of a successful meal).

We held our first meeting with the parents of our soccer players and I was introduced as the "assistant coach"... my last season coaching a high school team was the '92-'93 season for Gainesville High (FL)... 15 years ago! We won our district and regional championships, bowing out in the sectional (state quarterfinal) to perennial powerhouse Tallahassee Leon... I got to "retire" on a win, however, because I was given the privilege of coaching the North team in the Senior All-State Tournament, where we downed the South and West teams for a year of "bragging rights." I am really looking forward to being a part of what promises to be an exciting season for ACA.

Sunday, August 10th

Tim and I spent a good part of the afternoon getting the house ready for me to have our six new teachers over for lunch tomorrow... it is their first day of new faculty orientation, and I thought the least I could do is feed them.

I figure home-made pizza and salad is a pretty safe bet... I spent the evening getting the pizza sauce going in the crock-pot and slicing & dicing all the vegetables...

Peeling those carrotts took me back to the days when we were juicing those on a regular schedule... I miss my girls! Kara has been real busy getting ready for her year of ministry at the Georgia Tech Christian Campus Fellowship http://www.gtccf.org/

Saturday, August 9th

It's my mom's birthday today. She was born and raised on a farm in New Hampshire, and now lives in Davenport, (Central) Florida. She had been married 51 years to my dad, when he went to Heaven last year. Together they raised five kids, of whom I am the oldest. Mom is pictured between her second son (Steve) and second grandson (Tim) headed to the NCA graduation June 7th of this year.

Today also marks the fourth month since Lana joined my dad...

At the Jamboree today, ACA had a rough start dropping the opener 2-0 to North Buncombe, but bounced back with a 6-1 victory over Pisgah in the afternoon game. Tim scored the third goal on a penalty kick. We have a chance to be really competitive... team chemistry and focus are key!

08-08-08

We hired the Central-American! How exciting to finally have a full faculty for the coming school year... especially since orientation for new teachers starts Monday! Again, I meant to take a picture of Edgar to post on my blog, but suppose it will have to wait three days... all the new teachers are coming over for lunch their first day on the job, and I'll give Tim the assignment to get me a picture...

He and his teammates are scheduled to play in their first-ever soccer jamboree at Azalea Park tomorrow; they'll take on North Buncombe at 11:30 on Field 1 and Pisgah at 2:30 on Field 4... They'll be playing a 50-minute game against each opponent; it should be a great little pre-season tune-up... come on out if you're in the area; admission is free!

Thursday, August 7th

Another long and productive day preparing for the Monday arrival of our new teachers… We’ll be interviewing two candidates for the high school Spanish position tomorrow morning, a Peruvian and a Guatemalan! They are both exceptional candidates and I pray God will make clear to us His choice for ACA.

We’ve had one position to fill for about three months, have had no shortage of candidates, but for reasons known only to Him we are still in the hunt for the right person to take our Spanish program to new heights… At times like this I look forward to watching God provide just the right person in a way that leaves no doubt Who brought that teacher our way.

Wednesday, August 6th

This day started @7:00 with a five-hour School Board Retreat. ACA celebrates its 50th anniversary this year is blessed to have such a godly, competent and committed group of parents serving on its 15-member board.

I took a few pictures at the Administrative Assistant (Appreciation) Lunch and meant to post one tonight with this article... let's just say that my photography skills are not what they should be; you'll just have to imagine a private table at the Olive Garden with six of the most dynamic, hard-working professionals anywhere seated among ten grateful "private-office types"!

Both events were a reminder for me when I get feeling overwhelmed with the work-load that God is in control, and that He has put together a team to accomplish His purposes at ACA.

Tuesday, August 5th

I thought I'd start this blog the way I ended our CaringBridge journal... with a picture of the Dogwood Memorial given by the Class of 2008 to honor a couple of parents who went to Heaven during a season in which their sons became State Champions!

The things that Lana Kynast and Rick Hines (and the parents of all their teammates) instilled in their sons caused them to show extraordinary resolve in their quest for a common goal... I believe Lana and Rick clearly accomplished their goal of preparing their sons for the challenges life will throw their way...
The scripture verse the seniors chose for the memorial is Proverbs 12:28, which reads "in the way of righteousness there is life; along that path is immortality."
