Tuesday, June 29th

I'm way behind on this blog...
There was the four-day trip to NC (to wrap up things @ACA/see Tim and some of my Asheville fam) and Virginia (to meet Grace's Uncle Keith & Aunt Lou, among other things ;)
Yesterday, I interviewed for a position at the new high school in Clay County (Oakleaf) and tomorrow morning I'll be at the one pictured... both are about an hour's drive from where Grace lives on the east side of Jax.

Engaged!

The courtship lasted a-year-and-a-day, the engagement will likely be of similar duration leading to a late-June 2011 wedding.
Those interested in details of the Virginia-mountain-proposal will have to appeal to this blogger's fiancée!The ring pictured is the one Jeri Watson and Laura Benzing gave me last winter as their way of saying I was moving too slowly... the actual engagement ring is considerably smaller.

Courtship Anniversary

Today marked the one-year anniversary of the beginning of our courtship. Kara, Tim and I met Grace for lunch in Asheville June 19, 2009; we exchanged the following e-mails five days later:
(From Greg) Dear Grace,

I’ve wrestled with how to begin this letter ever since we met for lunch last Friday, because for 27 years I have done my best to put every woman besides Lana in one of two categories:
1. Sister-in-Christ;
2. Potential sister-in-Christ.

I have long considered you to be in the former, and have admired your strength of character and faith in what Lana and I regarded as very trying circumstances.

Life has us both in very different circumstances now, and while it is presumptuous for me to even think that you might have some interest in me as more than a brother, I am wondering if you would be willing to prayerfully explore the idea…

Some things you may or may not know about me that should factor into your answer:
1. I am fully committed to God’s service wherever that may lead;
2. I have no intention to retire in the next 20 years and live the world’s version of “the good life”;
3. Lana and I sold everything we had to go to Nicaragua , and have very little in the way of savings;
4. I tend to live frugally and give generously to others;
5. Kara and Tim are a big part of my life and any decisions made at this stage, and I don’t intend to make any big ones for at least another year.

I’ve known you for 26 years, Grace, but it has mostly been as Ken’s wife and Lana’s dear friend. Since we live a couple of states apart, the logistics of getting to know you better would be challenging, but if you’re game, I would be too!

Looking forward to seeing how God leads,

Greg

(From Grace) Dear Greg,
YES, of course, I'm game!

And I already knew all those things about you. I believe we have a lot of that in common.

I am praying too, about my life and the decisions ahead, and have been praying for you too.
Grace

27th Anniversary

Lana and I pledged to love each other "till death parted us" on this date in 1983 in a small ceremony on the island of Maui... four years later, our family had grown to this size:

Monday, June 21st

This is Tim's latest FB profile pic... he's spending his first night on the UNCA campus as part of a two-day orientation, which he described as "a lot of fun" in a text this evening. Tomorrow's schedule includes his first meeting as one of this year's crop of soccer recruits... the coach who recruited Tim has since taken another position, and they are yet to name his replacement... will that decision be revealed tomorrow?

Father's Day

Not sure when nor where this picture of my parents was taken... Dad took leave of this earth almost three-and-a-half years ago.
My four brothers/sisters and I are blessed-beyond-measure to have had Frank William Kynast as our father (and his bride, the former Anne Higgins, as our mother.)

Speaking for the five of us (and your twelve grandchildren):
----We love and miss you, Dad/"G-Dad"!

Friday, June 18th

The interview(s) went really well... Andrew Jackson is an inner-city high school classified as "turnaround", consequence of having earned an "F" rating through its standardized test scores the past three years... there is something exciting to me about the idea of being involved in turning things around there...

June 18th is also the 46th anniversary of my little brother Mike's entry into this world; he was the only one of the five of us born outside the country (Buenos Aires, Argentina)
--------------Happy Birthday, Bro! (pictured with wife Suzanne)

Thursday, June 17th

Grace and I thought we'd watch the Mexico/France match at a Mexican restaurant... What a game! They did get our order wrong, but who could blame them? The cooks surely were glued to the TV; it was a great 2-0 victory for our southern neighbors!
I will miss tomorrow morning's US/Slovenia game... have my first interview @11:00 with the Principal at Andrew Jackson High!

Wednesday, June 16th

Spent the day dropping my resume off at schools in Duval and Clay counties, including this brand new one called Oakleaf High School... they apparently do have an opening in Spanish, but it'll be another couple of weeks till the next round of interviews...

Tuesday, June 15th

Grace had two days of post-planning, so I got to meet all her colleagues, help pack up her room and move down the hall for next school year... here a shot of us in her office doorway this afternoon:Next order of business is finding a job for myself... I've applied on-line for positions teaching Spanish in Duval and surrounding counties; probably time to make a couple of personal visits...

Monday, June 14th

Tim had been hoping to work at Disneyland this summer (and stay with his aunt and uncle in Southern California.) That plan unravelled when HR got wind of his need to be back in Asheville August 1st to train with the UNCA Soccer Team for the fall season (they generally only hire people who can work through Labor Day)...
Plan B?: A landscaping job in Asheville...
Work started today!

The Move South

My apologies to my faithful readers for the lapse in posts... I had to turn in my lap-top on Friday (my last day at ACA), and since then every ounce of my energy has gone into the move to Jax...
On the Asheville end Kara, Tim & I got tons of help from Mike & Linda Richardson; Joe, Cheri, Caleb & Anna Beth Hagan; Bill & Ginny Pierson; Terry & Laura Hughes and others...On the Florida end it was Grace, Nathan & Will Baxley; Mitch & Heather Wright; Donovaun Lindsey; Justin Reppert (photo)

Thursday, June 10th

The loading process has begun!
Tomorrow (Friday) around 5:00 should be the time to load all the heavy furniture...
All this just as the World Cup kicks off in South Africa... not great planning on my part to be driving a 26' truck while the US plays its opening game against England (Saturday @1:30)! Maybe soccer's less of a priority in my life than it has been ;)

My Sister Susie's 50th!

My tennis pro sistah has tapped into the fountain of youth down there in Orlando, so even though she still looks 29, she hit the half-century mark today...

--------Happy Birthday, sis!

Moving always means finding a new barber...
Dave Hopkins @A Cut Above in Skyland has done a great job for Tim and me these past five years...This is my first picture with my new camera-phone... not too clear; but then, it's shot through a mirror...

Chets is Grace's church...
Whenever I'm in Jax, you can find us there Sunday mornings, 9:45 worship and the 11:00 college Bible study, which we'll be team teaching next Sunday!

June 2nd

Here's what was read as Tim received his diploma last Saturday:
Timothy Aaron Kynast
Tim, you have consistently demonstrated humility and quiet leadership even when things were not easy. You have responded with integrity, grit, perseverance and character. There is a great photo of you during the soccer playoffs, flat on your back in mud and water, entangled with an opposing player. The pain and fatigue of the elements and the competition is obvious. How true to life! Continue to go after the “game of life” as you do in soccer; with passion, accuracy, team play and “a never quit” attitude. James 1:12, “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”

First Day in June!

A couple of MKs making their own fun.
--i.e. after our run to Firehouse for Kara's send-off meal, these two decided to test the effect of a candle's flame on one of their drink cups... it's really not about what they were doing; it's about brother and sister spending time together, and it's music to this dad's heart!

Memorial Day

Having spent 16 years outside our country and a little time at Arlington a couple of weeks ago helps me have a greater appreciation for the price paid for the freedoms we enjoy as Americans...
