Monday, March 30th

Some of our high school students asked me in the fall if there was a place they could use as a prayer room... even with space being as limited as it is, that is a hard one to turn down!

The baseball team suffered a hard-fought 2-0 loss today against their stiffest competition in-conference... Christ school was the team we played the day after Lana went to Heaven last year; here's a portion of my CaringBridge entry on that game: "The first thing Tim has done after every game this season is march into his mom’s room to describe every detail of the game (and his performance) to her… it hit him hard to realize that she wouldn’t be there this time. It gave me an opportunity to tell him that for all we know she watched this game, and that we are both as proud of him as any parents could be of their son… you see, even though Tim went 2-for-3 at the plate, he had made his first error of the year (the team’s only one in the game) with two outs in the top of the fifth, and it had allowed the other team to score its only two runs and tie the game… at his next at-bat, he slapped the first strike into right field scoring a much-needed insurance run (and then stole third!) …I let him know that it made me even prouder that his RBI came on the heels of a costly error… everybody blows it from time to time; only those with a heart like his mother’s are able to bounce right back!" Sunday, March 29th

It was my turn to bring a snack for our morning Bible study ("Connect Group"); since the "bar is pretty high", I had to take a stab at creating something; the recipe for this "cheese danish" said it takes 40 minutes start to finish... more like 75 for this novice baker.

Saturday, March 28th

Our plumbing problem ended up being more than I could handle myself, so I called James Fox, who specializes in all types of repairs, remodeling and construction... in fact, James headed Lana's project to transform the garage into our master suite a year-and-a-half ago. Locals in need of a handyman can reach him at 828-712-0545... he does great work!

Speaking of work...
I spent three hours on my taxes this afternoon; hoping to find a few more deductions before they have to be filed!

Friday, March 27th

Tim's game got rained out... probably a good thing, since it gave us time to deal with a leak in the copper pipe coming out of our hot water heater...

It's my brother-in-law, Mitch's birthday... here he is with his fiancee, Heather, on their last trip to his (and Lana's) home state of Indiana. The wedding will be held May 30th in the West Indies (St. Lucia)

Thursday, March 26th

Opening night for our spring musical "Spitfire Grill" was great fun! Tickets are still available for Friday (7:00) and Saturday (2:00 & 7:00) showings through our front office @828.581.2200
You do not want to miss it!!

Wednesday, March 25th

Tim got to pitch the third and fourth inning of our 14-0 victory over Asheville School... he looked good (no walks, no hits, a strikeout); coach might make a middle reliever out of him yet! He also had his first triple of the season, with a shot to the gap in right center... his momma would be so proud!

Tuesday, March 24th

I got to see a half hour of the softball game between the middle school faculty meeting and the end of Tim's practice (we have work to do on this "dugout").
After dinner, Tim spent a couple of hours learning
a new song on his guitar!

Monday, March 23rd

Speaking of missing people... our 7th graders were on their annual retreat W-F of last week (caving in Tennessee among other things); they were back today... as you can tell from this picture (taken on the bus last Wednesday), they are loaded with energy...
Our baseball team got back to their winning ways today, downing Spartanburg Day 11-2 (quite an improvement over the 4-3 squeaker of the first week of the season).

Sunday, March 22nd

Our girls headed out at 6:30 this morning; Kara drove the three-and-a-half hour leg to Atlanta, and Mom the remaining seven hours to Davenport, giving her plenty of time to get ready for her 6:30 meeting at the clubhouse.
...We miss you already!

Sunday, March 22nd

It is not very clear, but since I caught it on film, I thought I must share... Tim's soccer coach, Terry Hughes (photo), put this 30-yard blast where the goalkeeper could only dream of making a save (the top left hand corner of the net)

Tim's Spanish teacher, Edgar Silva, opened the scoring for us with a gorgeous half-volley from the top of the box (I don't have a picture of that shot, but here he is with his wife, Erika). We still lost the game 4-3, but it certainly wasn't for lack of effort nor skill... Next week's match is in Memorial Stadium @1:00 v Stanford Smush.

Saturday, March 21st

It was a beautiful day for our 100-inning fund-raiser/picnic-lunch; part of the proceeds went to the Presbyterian Home for Children, the rest will help fund the baseball team's Easter break tournament in Myrtle Beach. The first picture shows our boys with some of the youth leaders from PHC; the second, their first trip through the buffet line... this evening Kara and Tim showed their G-Mom and me how to play "head and foot" (a card game we thought we knew ;-)

Friday, March 20th

Wild fires along the highway caused this little I-40 "parking lot" on the way to see Tim's game; we didn't do much better in the game itself, dropping a 9-7 decision to Rabun Gap (our first conference loss)... the fun part of the evening was coming home to find my mom and daughter waiting (Kara declined the offer to be included in this picture)... they'll be here through Sunday morning!

Thursday, March 19th

We played our first home game today... remember last year's? That was the famous "web-cast" game that Lana watched from home... today they unveiled this sign that Tim's chapel small group commissioned to honor her... how cool is that?!! The picture shows her son (#10) warming up at first base...
We didn't do nearly as well on the field as in last year's home opener... Tim was even brought in to try and stop the bleeding from the mound in the top of the 5th (pictured below, with his teammate, Jared Robinson, at shortstop), but Brevard proved to be the better team this afternoon, pinning a 17-4 loss on the defending 2A state champs... ouch!

Wednesday, March 18th

It's Jackie Loftsgard's 18th birthday! (pictured with her Art teacher, Joni Hubers, and classmate featured on Monday's entry, Harry Miranda).
The Nicaraguans that didn't know us very well always thought she and Tim were brother and sister growing up; Jackie is also part of the NCA Class of 2009.
The second picture shows her with her two brothers, three sisters and fellow Nicaraguan MKs, the Mosts & Robinsons... part of the "gang" my kids grew up with! (L2R) Jono, Naomi, Kellan, Leah, Daniel, Jackie, Katie, Desiree, Jared, Erika & Corey... we miss you all!!!

Tuesday, March 17th

It's not a great picture, but considering that I was also keeping stats on the game, it'll have to do... it shows Brad Guenguerich (sophomore pitcher & infielder) knocking a single up the middle in the top of the 7th inning (one of only 5 hits for ACA on the day). Our opponent, West Henderson (now 6-0), is one of the strongest teams in the area, having made the state play-offs 21 of the last 22 years, including the last 10... there was some satisfaction in avoiding the "10-run rule" in our 11-3 loss tonight (especially since we were down 8-1 after four innings).

Monday, March 16th

Tim's game got rained out (and re-scheduled to Thursday @4:30), which was providential for me, since it allowed me to make my 3:45 committee meeting, have dinner with my son and make it back in time for tonight's "Open Forum" with our upper school parents. Most of you know Gerson "Harry" Miranda (Tim's best friend from Nicaragua)... I've been looking for an opportunity to post this picture I pulled from his Facebook. Those of you that have been following this blog know that Tim and I have been rounding up a little group to go down and see Harry and the rest of Tim's former classmates graduate from the Nicaragua Christian Academy June 5th. They call this "sandboarding"... it involves surfing down the ash on the side of a volcano... any takers?

Sunday, March 15th

I have an even greater appreciation for the job of a translator this evening. Larry and Mary DeBoer asked me to translate the titles to the hymns in this little book they use in the Spanish service at Biltmore... took me over three hours to accomplish that "little" task (there are 329)!

Tim has his first home game tomorrow at 4:00 against Brevard (a really strong team); they will need their "A" game to be competitive in that one...

Saturday, March 14th

Add the ages of my good friends pictured below and you get 100 as of today... Troy Doudy (left) was our neighbor the last few years we were in Managua; he, his wife (Ginnette) and son (Aaron) are still actively involved in all God is doing through the Assemblies of God mission there... (see www.doudynicaragua.org)

Joe Hagan (right) is our college guidance counselor at ACA; his office is next door to mine; his wife is my son's Anatomy & Physiology teacher, and their son (Caleb) is one of Tim's classmates... having men I trust (like these two) around has been invaluable to me, especially these last few years... Happy Birthday, Troy & Joe!

Friday, March 13th

This is our third year to field a softball team at ACA; the girls are still "taking their lumps"; I love watching them play, though, because they have such great team spirit & are so encouraging of each other.Pictured are Chandler Erin (1st base); Shelby Cogburn (pitching); Becca Bryan (3rd); Allison Coneys (catching).

The baseball team squeaked out another one this afternoon, 4-3. Tim went two-for-three with a pair of singles, a walk, a run, an RBI and a stolen base; he continues to play error-free ball at first.

Thursday, March 12th

Two of the teams ready to battle it out during one of this morning's various competitions at the Sixth Grade Retreat being held at Ridgecrest Conference Center. (L2R) Sarah, Hannah, Taylor, Caroline, Mattie, Joseph, Nathaniel, Matt & Craig.

The baseball team plays its first conference opponent tomorrow down in Spartanburg (SDS), and its first home game Monday @4:00 vs. Brevard (the girls soccer team will be playing at the same time on the adjacent field).

Wednesday, March 11th

Something a little different today: the Western Carolina Rescue Mission had asked if our students would make them some greeting cards for use on special occasions. Pictured (above) are some of our sophomores working with their fourth grade counterparts, and (at right) one of our seventh graders (Jacob Benzing) leading a pair of kindergartners in prayer for the staff and residents of the downtown mission.

Tuesday, March 10th

Tim had a great first at-bat... fighting off three third strikes and lining out to deep right center. This was his second time up... a double down the right field line. The boys did just enough to win, riding a two-run homer by Michael Moore, and three clutch RBI's by Jared Robinson to a 5-4 victory over East Henderson.

Monday, March 9th

A year ago this morning, Lana had exactly one month left of time on this earth... Since the picture is dated two weeks earlier, it was taken at T-45 days. For someone like Lana who knows what lies beyond, having the kind of advanced warning we had is a real blessing... a chance to say all the things we want to make sure we've said before we leave...Clockwise from Lana: Heather Brown (her brother, Mitch's fiancee, who lives in Gainesville, FL); Mary Brady (her mom, also a Gainesville resident); and our daughter, Kara (who is wrapping up a one-year ministry assignment through the Christian Campus Fellowship @Georgia Tech and praying about where to invest her talents beginning in May).

Sunday, March 8th

We purchased this hammock a year-and-a-half ago in Masaya, Nicaragua (a town famous for making this particular style), and it has just now found a place to earn its worth... Tim approves.
He actually made room for his dad and we had a good little chat there this beautiful March afternoon; I think we're ready for the challenges of a new week!

Saturday, March 7th

Our "Connect Group" leadership team got together at Steve & Freda Cooper's this morning for breakfast, fellowship & prayer...
A terrific group of people, about half of whom are retired from paying jobs, but all still as active as ever in an impressive array of ministries at home and abroad!Counterclockwise from my seat (the empty one): Freda, Steve, Scott, Bill, Tom, Jan, Sharon, Jeannine, Denise & Terry.

Friday, March 6th

Here's a shot of the stands at the award ceremony for the area Math Olympics (hosted by ACA); our delegation of 3rd-8th graders (and a few proud parents) are seated in the first (far left) section; pictured at left are two of our 6th graders, Patrick Sullivan and Caroline Hopkins (in navy polos), receiving awards in reasoning, with the latter taking top honors in the category!

Thursday, March 5th

Pretty much everytime prayer requests are shared of late, they include mention of the difficult economic times we face in our country... not to minimize the reality of those, but to perhaps broaden our perspective a little, I continue to keep up with the news south-of-the-border... This from La Prensa (Managua): The caption reads: "Ya see?, this joke of a government is throwing us a rope to help us out of this economic crisis" (the noose is labeled: "social program cut-backs")...

Wednesday, March 4th

Jenny Barker and Kelly Barnett (both 8th graders) ready to tackle the "rock wall" that the folks at Camp Cedar Cliff brought over to challenge our middle schoolers today.
Some of them zipped right up to the top like pros and others felt a real sense of accomplishment when they reached it... they all seemed to enjoy the change of pace and being outside on a gorgeous day in the mountains...

Tuesday, March 3rd

This 51-year-old body is taking a little longer to recover than my son's 17-year-old version. He wasn't totally symptom-free when I filmed this clip yesterday afternoon, but I wasn't up to a veto of his desire to play out in the puffy white stuff, and with his pledge to take a nice hot bath immediately thereafter, it didn't seem like too irresponsible an activity... perhaps I should've gotten out there with

Monday, March 2nd

Often our "snow days" happen at the most inopportune times... today's couldn't have come at a better one; Tim and I both needed the extra day to rid ourselves of the nasty flu symptoms that have plagued us for the past 48-hours... we took turns fixing meals for each other (he made pancakes this morning... pretty much from scratch, using Bisquick)

Monday, March 2, 2009

Sunday, March 1st

Tim and I went to the Spanish service at Biltmore last night, and both woke up sick this morning... we've been trying to get it out of our systems today to be ready for the week ahead... it's "spiritual-emphasis week" in the lower and middle schools; a team of students from Columbia International University will be leading activities in the MS tomorrow and Tuesday...

Saturday, February 28th

We trailed at the end of every quarter, except the only one that really counts to "bottom-line" kind of people... Yep, we're state champs in yet another sport!! Tim sent me this picture of the final scoreboard from his cell phone... it means we outscored our opponents 30-13 in the 4th quarter... Go Lions!(Top L2R) Coach Brandon Ray, Coach Mike Woods (hidden), Blake Hedrick, Colton Daugherty, Sam Johnson, Ignas Palaima, Josh Gracie, Micheal Woods, Head Coach Andy Ray; (Middle L2R) Michael Moore, Will Robinson, David Edwards, David Denton, Tyler Long; (Bottom L2R) Devonte Penland, Alan Johnson, Zeb Dowdle (Mgr.), Ryan Ledford (Mgr.) Sam, Ignas & Tyler are the only 3 seniors...
